College Textbooks - Do's & Don'ts

By Kelly Liyakasa

Like most college students, you’re finishing up your finals and are ready to break for the summer. The last thing on your mind is reading a textbook after a grueling semester or more. For many unlucky college students, they have no choice but to go to summer school to rack up those credits.

Many college students and adults who simply want to take a few classes will probably find themselves in a campus bookstore, debating whether they really need to buy that $250 book or just photocopy a friend’s version. Here are the do’s and don’ts of college textbook purchases to avoid any sticky bookstore altercations.

Do:

• Make a checklist of books you definitely need, may need, and can probably get by without. This will save you time and money.

• Buy your own copy of a book if you can afford it. It’s all too common for a friend to lose your book and you both end up losing the cash.

• Ask for used books. They’re usually in mint condition and about 25% cheaper than a brand new book.

• Find out your campus bookstore’s return policy. Some stores have week-long return policies, which can come quick!

Don’t:

• Wait until the last minute to purchase that Biology book. Sometimes bookstores run out and you may be on mail-order for half the semester.

• Go to a bookstore without proper identification and a credit card. Your bill will most likely be over $500 and most campus stores require you to show a license or ID.

• Throw your receipt away. In the event that you bought the wrong one or your professor decides three weeks into the semester that your class will forego that particular book, you’ll need your receipts.

• Limit yourself to only purchasing from your designated school bookstore. There are many online resources that allow you to compare cheap textbooks.

6StarReviews.com makes note of one textbook service, eCampus, which provides students with extensive databases of books. They also have fun perks like college apparel for those with school spirit. The next time you need to buy a few books, skip the line you’re sure to wait in at the bookstore and do some online shopping.

Opening Your Own Bookstore - Why It's a Good Idea

By Victor Epand Platinum Quality Author

When you are looking at the different things that you can do for your own business, you probably never really thought about opening a bookstore. Maybe you should though. It could be more profitable in the long run if you are.

How Do You Start?

There are a few things that you will need to think about first, before you even really start. One of these is if you really have a store that can support many books and many subjects that you will want to possibly cover in your bookstore. You will really need to look for the books that will help your business get off the ground. Some to consider are business books and used books that you can resell for a little bit of profit. This can be a great thing for a business that is relatively new and for a business that is trying to set up a standard without breaking the bank on the inventory.

Where Do You Get These Books?

There are several places that you can get used books as well as books that are brand new. It just depends on what you want and where you decide that you want to look. A good place to look is on the Internet. This is because there is so much information that you can get from there as well as a lot of different places that will offer you great prices on used books that you may be interested in. Take a minute to find the best deals, so that you can make the most profit on your used books as well as the books that are new in your store.

What Do You Do Once You Have Your Store Open?

There are many feelings you might have once you have your books and your used books set up in your store. You will probably be happy, but you may also feel confused about what you will need to do next in your used book and new book business. You will be able to get a lot of help if you want it for your business.

You can have a great store with your used books if you really work at it. You can make it work but you do have to get though the hard times that does come with having your own business. A used book business is one that will give you many rewards, but you will have to understand that it takes time for a business to grow, so take your time and get the most out of it.

Book Promotion Myth -- The Best Place to Sell Books is a Bookstore

By Judy Cullins Platinum Quality Author

When authors think of their audience buying books they think of bookstores. This myth sends authors taking the long, arduous road to seeking out an agent, a publisher, hoping their book will become a best seller. It won't. Why?

Because you are not famous, your publishing support amounts only to a three-month book tour, billed against your sales. Your book's shelf life at Barnes and Noble or other brick and mortar bookstores is about three months too. And, you the author must promote it full time to receive less than 50% of the profits.

Another reason bookstores disappoint the author is that most people go into the store to browse. They want fiction, some non-fiction, but they aren't sure what. If your book is shelved among more popular authors, potential buyers will pass it by for the well-known name.

Marketing guru, John Kremer, author of "1001 Ways to Market Your Book" says "I'm glad I don't rely on retail "brick and mortar" bookstore sales for my income, but it will be nice to add that icing on the cake into my cash flow again."

Before his updated version this year, in three years, John has sold 45,000 copies of his book. He is a marketer par excellence. He uses non-traditional marketing strategies; his web site, his ezine which offers tips, products and seminars, specialty stores, foreign markets, libraries, and back of the room sales from speaking engagements.

Because John is a recognized name, he gets a lot of shelf space in the bookstore--cover side out. For your lesser-known book, only your spine will show and after three months of initial placement, your book will fade away unless you put on your promotion hat to get customers to the store.

In one book coaching session, a new client thought he wanted to sell to the bookstores. I asked him who was his particular audience. He said business people. What kind of business people? Do these people go to the "brick and mortar" bookstore for a business book? Or, will they be more likely to subscribe to online business ezines or visit a business Web site for specific kinds of business books?

Your book coach knows that online promotion is the cheapest, easiest, and most profitable way to sell books.

DID YOU KNOW?

*Seventy percent of US adults haven't been in a bookstore for the last 5 years.
*Bookstores sell only 45% of all books sold.
*Bookstores return non-sold books to the author-think of the Starbucks people dripping their coffee and scone on your book.
*Bookstores will take 90 days, even a year or more to pay you for your total book sales.
*Bookstores only order two or three copies at a time because of limited shelf space.
*Bookstores buy only from a distributor or wholesaler.

Why the big push to get a wholesale or distributor and get into the bookstore?

These people represent so many other authors don't you wonder how much attention your book will receive? They exact healthy fees, around 55%. That leaves a small profit for the author, and remember, bookstores, distributors and wholesalers don't promote your book!

After her distributor went belly up and she lost $160,000, one author said she would rather have more control over her priceless products. She distributes them all herself now through various venues that suit her personality.

Authors spend a lot of time and money chasing the improbable, when the "golden egg" of self-publishing and self-promotion is right in front of them. In my opinion, I'd sell my books everywhere except the brick and mortar bookstore!

Cheap Textbooks - Compare Prices Before Buying

By Darren W Chow Platinum Quality Author

On the Internet, doing business involves a lot of transparency. Traditionally, before the age of the Internet, if you ever want to buy a textbook, you will have to visit a brick and mortar bookstore. Once there, you search for the book that you are looking for, and if you find it, you will most likely buy it there and then. That's because you are already physically in the bookstore. Traveling to another bookstore just to compare prices just isn't a practical thing to do.

Today, technology can help you save a lot of money. Innovative developers have come up with cutting edge price comparison engines that will present you with all the information that you need before making a buying decision.

Every year, millions of dollars are spent on products like textbooks online. Many people like to make purchases online because of the convenience (just sitting in front of the computer and clicking away) and because of the transparency.

Let's say you are trying to buy textbooks for the upcoming semester. The educational institution has already given you a list of book titles so that you can start sourcing for them. Very often, the titles are offered by the school bookstore. But upon closer examination, you will most likely find that the school bookstore don't offer the textbooks at attractive prices. Maybe the prices will be a little lower compared to the retail pricing. But the chances are higher that you can find better prices on the Internet.

So how do you go about sourcing for cheaper textbooks?

Some would suggest going straight to major book retailers such as Buy or Amazon and conduct a quick search. However, if you adopt that approach, you still won't be able to find the best prices.

To find the best prices, you will need to go to some kind of price comparison search engine. Price comparison is not a new technology, and has been around for years. Now that you need to get some new textbooks, perhaps it's time to get acquitted with some comparison engines.

How a price comparison engine works is simple. When you search for a book title, a list of search results surface. The information will be presented to you in a tabular format. In the table, you have all the information that you need to make a buying decision. For example, you will be able to see if the book title is in stock, the retail price, the shipping price, and the total price. To choose, simply select the vendor that offers the lowest total price.

To save even more money, you may wish to visit websites that specialize in selling cheap textbooks. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that the prices may even be cheaper than those you see in the comparison search engines.

Seven Deadly Signs of Poetry Scams

By Kristin Johnson Platinum Quality Author

In America, poets are held in such low esteem that even the most Honored Representative from Nigeria won’t bother scamming us. Society says to us what Dermot Mulroney says to Julia Roberts in “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” that we are “The pus that infects the mucus that cruds up the fungus that feeds on the pond scum.”

Even being cheated by Mr. Honorable Minister, however, is preferable to the poetry scams that have proliferated. Wind Publications’ Literary Scam guide has this to say:

Hidden among the many sponsors of legitimate literary contests advertised on the internet lurk those who care little about literature, its audience, or authors. These organizations and individuals exist solely for profit through their so-called writing or poetry contests. Often you'll find these "free" poetry contests lavishly advertised in your local newspaper.

There is a cottage industry of writing scams perpetuated by pus poetry pimps, the chief among them International Library of Poetry, aka Noble House Press, aka Poetry.com. They advertise in USA Weekend and the Penny Saver--well, not the Penny Saver, but they might as well, because that sums up their opinion of poets. If you’ve seen the ads or received a letter that says, “Congratulations, your poem has been selected for our next anthology,” congratulations, you’re being scammed.

Like so-called modeling agencies or “talent agents” who prey on the dreams of nubile girls wanting to be the next Lindsay Lohan, poetry pyramid schemes exploit the number one hope of writers: publication, and more importantly, recognition. Many excellent Web sites such as Preditors and Editors and PoetryNotCom detail the outrageous mechanics of poetry “anthology” scams, and the infamous Wergle Flomp Poetry Contest by WinningWriters.com cheerfully skewers vanity poetry contests and the submicroorganisms who perpetuate them.

How do you spot a poetry scam? Look for…

1. Insane pie in the sky prize amounts.

I ran the DeAnn Lubell Professional Writers’ Competition. Most poetry contests with reading fees pay, at most, $1,000, and that’s for a book-length manuscript of poetry. For a single poem, the first prize pot is usually a whopping $100, $150 tops. A $20 million prize, as dangled by Noble House, is a big crimson flag. Oh, and no one ever offers poets a chance to win a world cruise. It’s usually assumed that we sail around the world on a Mark Twain raft, a sampan, or a Hemingway skiff.

2. No contest fees.

Wergle Flomp is the only “F*r*e*e” poetry contest. Now, people on the Internet and toiling poets naturally leap at the word “F*r*e*e”. But, like victims of those modeling scams, you’ll end up paying for your moment of bargain hunting. Modeling scams want you to work with a particular photographer (usually fake European). Likewise, poetry scams won’t let you even see your poem in print unless you pay for the anthology. When you do pay for the anthology, you may wonder if you just bought a copy of the Penny Saver, because your poem looks like it was crammed onto the page to make room for the “Spot the Difference” puzzle and the adult talk lines. Then there are those awards banquets…

3. Phony awards banquets.

Ten years ago, no joke, I received a mailing from Famous Poets Society that lured me to fork over the cash to attend an awards banquet and convention. If I paid my money, I could join the elite company of poets such as…Ted Lange of “Love Boat” fame. Who knew Isaac the bartender was a closet Langston Hughes? Plus, I could win $6,000 in door prizes. Now, if you’ve ever attended a poetry reading, especially in coffeehouses, you know that poets wear their vow of poverty as proudly as a Che Guevara T-shirt. Just the thought of winning $25 in a poetry slam made my fellow poets and me weep more cathartically than the contestants on “Deal or No Deal.” And Ted Lange usually doesn’t attend.

4. Questionable reputation or none at all.

In poetry, if you don’t have Nikki Giovanni, Czeslaw Milosz or Donald Hall front and center in your magazine, plus several angsty Eastern European poets, would-be poets drop you like Oprah dropped James Frey. Look for magazines, publishers and poetry contests that publish and are judged by literary lions. It’s Bukowski or bust. And when Poetry.com can’t figure out that Dave Barry and 20/20 are hoaxing them, the joke’s on Poetry.com. Similarly, if a vanity press charges you $3,000 to $8,000 to publish your collection of poems, and the top author promoted by Façade Press is an eighteen-year-old writing poems from the point of view of her liver, save your money for the hard work of actually submitting your poems to Threepenny Review, or literary magazines or publishers that you read about in Writer’s Market or Poets and Writers.

5. Advertising in newspapers and glossy magazines.

Real poetry contests don’t advertise in USA Weekend--sure, USA Weekend may sponsor a teen essay contest, but poetry advertisers? Forget it. People don’t pick up USA Weekend as a literary publication, even though USA Weekend features books and authors. If you see a mass call for poets in a mass market magazine, give it a miss. Real poetry contests get deluged with submissions as it is. They don’t need to fish for more.

6. Sending you a letter of acceptance for a contest you can’t remember entering or a publisher you can’t remember submitting to.

I admit, as a writer I have difficulty keeping track of what I sent to whom and when—we go into writing to avoid paperwork, not do it, although when we’re not in the mood, reorganizing files suddenly becomes as tempting as a day in Cancun. Fortunately, Writer’s Market features a Submission Tracker, and some enterprising bloggers actually post their submission schedule to make the rest of us sigh in unorganized envy. If you can’t find the cover letter/e-query in your file cabinet, on your computer, on your Zip drive (you do back up, right?), or in your Sent folder, chances are you never submitted to National Library of Poetry or Wordscum.com (apologies if there actually is a Web site out there called Wordscum.com). Yes, after 300 rejections, getting an acceptance letter may be a boost, but to misquote Groucho Marx, think twice before you accept just any club that will have you as a member. Aim higher. Imagine if JK Rowling had just said, “All right, I’ll pay a million pounds to have a few hundred copies of Harry Potter for my friends and relatives to buy.”

7. Promising to get your book or handsome anthology on the bestseller rack in bookstores.

Number one, PoetryNotCom is one of the many sites reporting that this claim is bogus. Number two, most people who go into a bookstore to read poetry probably can find the poetry section blindfolded and spend three hours debating the symbolism in Whitman over a decaf skinny latte at Borders Café. Number two, although getting your book in bookstores is still the gold standard, Amazon.com and online retailing make it easy for even the tiniest press to get books noticed. Number three, bookstores are so glutted with inventory that they can’t even stock the POD books, let alone anything from ScamPoet Publishing or Poetry.com, and bookstores will not accept vanity press books. For that matter, no poet besides Ludacris or Jimmy Carter will end up on the bestseller list in a bookstore. We don’t go into poetry to be rich. We go into poetry to sound our barbaric yawp…and a fellowship or two is nice, too.

Many beginning poets get bilked, but you don’t have to. If you’re smart and ambitious, you’ll be a successful poet with tons of lierary magazines and e-zines bearing your byline. Poetry.com and its ilk will always be “The pus that infects the mucus that cruds up the fungus that feeds on the pond scum.”

Tips On How To Pick Up Women From Bookstores

By Rich J Carter Platinum Quality Author

Have you ever wondered how to pick up women from bookstores? You will find plenty of women that you can attract when you visit a bookstore. The atmosphere in the bookstore is casual and you can attract many women who are interested in relationships.

If you see a woman in a bookstore then you can approach her in several ways. For instance, you can walk to her and ask her opinion on a particular book. Just ask her whether she has read the book or not and if she did then you can ask whether the book is worth reading.

Body language plays a very important role when you are trying to pick up women from bookstores. If you want to attract the attention of a particular woman, then act like a good guy. Women do not like men who try to act over smart. Being smart is good but being over smart will take you no where.

Do not act as if you are in the bookstore simply to pick up women. You should look like a guy who is genuinely interested in buying books. If you act desperate then the woman would know that you are simply in the bookstore to pick up women. So when you are in the store, you should act as if you are looking for some books so that the women there would not suspect you of being a player. Most women do not like being picked by players so keep this in mind when you want to pick up women from book stores.

On the other hand, if you see a woman checking out a particular book that you have read then you can walk up to her and tell her that it is a great book. You can start a conversation with her and then when you feel that she is interested, you can ask her out for a coffee.

If you are some one who has never read a book in your life then you can go up to a woman and ask her to recommend a book, which you want to give to a friend for his or her birthday. Most women are friendly when you ask for their help so be sure that you act genuine. If she senses that you are just trying to pick her up, she will not fall in to your trap.

One very common example that you can use to start up a conversation with a woman in a book store is to take a book to her and ask her the meaning of a particular word. Regardless of whether she knows the meaning of the word or not, she will most definitely respond to you. This way you can start up a conversation with her and then take it from there.

Picking up women from bookstores is not a difficult task if you know what you are doing. All you need is a good attitude and self-confidence. After reading this, I hope you would succeed the next time you try to pick a woman from a bookstore!

By Daniel Quits

If you're looking to buy a new book, be it fiction, non-fiction, textbooks or anything else, you should considering buying your books online. There are several reasons for this. Most notably, buying books from a brick and mortar book store is usually much more expensive. Preparing For a Book Signing

By Victor Epand Platinum Quality Author

An author signs a copy of his book as a part of the book promotion termed as 'book signing'. Book signing has become a major event as it gives the buyer an opportunity to meet the author. All the best selling authors understand the importance of this event and make the best of book signing.

If the book signing is such an important event in book promotion, it definitely pays to attach more creativity, thought and planning to make it a more impressive, innovative, and effective presentation. Let us see how this can be achieved.

The Perfect Setting

Typically, book signing sessions are held at bookstores. However, think about the venue that will be most suitable for the subject of the book. The very atmosphere and venue could make the audience more appreciative, and receptive to the book, making them more inclined to buy the book. The book signing of a book on nature, or gardening, if organized in an open air garden setting, is likely to receive a more fruitful response than in a formal hall or store setting.

Think about a book that is an autobiography or biography of an author or poet. How about planning the book signing session in a bookstore itself, with posters and banners of the book displayed in an attractive manner? It will definitely create more interest in the illustration of the subject itself, thus resulting in a great response in the form of more copies sold at book signing. You can think of such innovative ideas to plan the book signing session in a more appropriate setting.

The right focus

Remember, the author is the star of a book signing session. It will be the author, who will be in the public eye, who will persuade them into buying the book. Make the right impression; engage the audience in the theme with interaction and exchanges on the subject of the book, convincing them to buy a copy of the book. The author's performance should be effective enough to generate an interest, prompting the customer to buy a copy of the book immediately, to grab the opportunity of the brief encounter with the author that a book signing event provides.

Remember, it is a part of the book promotion process

Book signing is a part of the long process of book promotion. It provides the author an opportunity to interact with potential buyers. An author must realize the importance of promoting the services of a bookstore, in order to create an affinity between the buyers and the bookstore. Like the book, if the bookstore is highlighted, more people will visit it and the bookstore staff will ensure the best service to sell the book.

The bookstore sales people interact with the customer on a daily basis, thus creating a kind of bond, and acting as a guide while selecting a book. Therefore, using a book signing session to make a bond with the bookstore people helps ensure still greater residual sales over a period of time. All these things need to be considered while participating in a book signing session.

Book signing is an event that brings together the author and the book loving and buying public. It is important, therefore, to make the most of it by taking care of all the different factors involved for the effective marketing of the book.

Cheap Textbooks - Saving Money During Bad Times

By Darren W Chow Platinum Quality Author

Education is something that is ongoing. It doesn't matter if the economy is good or bad. But when times are bad, opportunities to save money start to surface. This is great news, especially for full time students who don't have an income.

Like it or not, it is a fact that some textbooks can be rather expensive. The problem is, when you are enrolled in a course, you can't choose which books you want to buy. It's mandatory for you to have the books that the course require you to have. For example, if you are studying architecture, there are very specific architectural books that you need to purchase. You just can't use any book that you come across in the bookstore.

And sometimes just a single textbook alone can cost you $40 to $50. Imagine having to buy 5 or more text books per study term. That easily works out to be several hundred dollars. Besides, textbooks tend to be kept away once the course is over. That's why many students are looking for different ways to obtain cheap textbooks. When they are done with the books, they become part of the storeroom collection.

So how to go about sourcing for cheap textbooks?

The first place that you should start with, is the Internet. The Internet is the ideal place to look for cheap textbooks because information is so easily available. With a few simple clicks, you should be able to locate the book title that you are looking for. You can start your search on one of the major search engines, or you can start from discount bookstores that sell cheap textbooks online.

Visiting a discount bookstore can be a rather pleasant experience. That's because you may find some really great deals unexpectedly. For instance, a textbook that will cost you $50 at retail may just require you to pay $25 after discount. That is 50% off the regular price.

To ensure that you have a comprehensive shopping experience, one discount bookstore we came across even had an in-built price comparison engine that allows you to see the latest pricing from some of the largest online retailers. Major book retailers include Abebooks, Amazon, Buy, eCampus, and many more. If you find the price to be cheaper elsewhere, you can always click through to purchase from the other online bookstore.

Searching for the book title on an online bookstore is a simple process. Just like public library systems, you can search using the book title, the author, or the ISBN number. If you don't have specific information on the book that you are looking for, just enter some keywords and let the results surface. Hopefully, the book that you are looking for will come up in the search results.

There is no need to spend a small fortune on textbooks. That is, if you know where to look!

Literary Agent - Find One At Your Bookstore

By Joan Clout-Kruse Platinum Quality Author

Finding a literary agent is easier than you think. Forget those long Google or Ask searches. I got tired after searching the first three pages and none of them gave me what I wanted-the names and contact information of agents.

Don't get lost in a myriad of directory lists that are not very helpful in breaking down their lists by category. A personal referral from a colleague is terrific but if you can't get that, here is a unique way to find a literary agent... Go to the bookstore.

Check out your favorite bookstore and find the section that your future book will
appear. Suppose it is a diet cookbook. Look for the books that are authored by
individuals and not written on behalf of a company.

Then read the Acknowledgement page of every diet cookbook. Skim the
Acknowledgement page to see if the author has given recognition to a literary
agent. I checked out three writing books I have here in my library and two of them
acknowledged their agents.

You now have the names of some agents that are representing authors who wrote
on the same topic as you. Those are the agents to contact first to see if they would
represent you.

Bring a notebook or some 3x5 cards with you and begin making notes of the literary agents listed in books similar to the one you are writing. Soon will you will a hot list and you can start sending query letters to these agents. One of them just might be interested in representing you.

Your bookstore is a great way to find a literary agent for your next
book. Try this technique as it is much better than searching outdated listings in the library.

What Can You Find at Your Local Religious Bookstore?

By Hwang Keum-Ok Platinum Quality Author

Shopping around for religious supplies for your church or private life can present people with a challenge if they don't realize that they can go to a religious bookstore. If you go into your local bookstore there are often a lot of religious books but not all that are out there, not even close.

In religious bookstores you will find some really good books on religion but these bookstores are often focused to just one faith such as Christianity and Judaism for example. Within these bookstores you will find books dealing with every book in the Bible as well as a plethora of other topics many that can be traced back to the Bibles teachings in one form or another.

You will also find a range of religious items like statues, crosses, plates, plaques, necklaces, and many more items too many to list here in this article. The beauty of the religious bookstores are that they are not just bookstores, far from it. Although the majority of what they offer are books, they have a range of other things you may need -- including book covers, protectors, book marks, highlighters, and other book accessories.

One of the most valuable things at a local religious bookstore is a staff that is more than helpful, knowledgeable and often who have a degree from a Bible college. They are willing to answer any questions you may have and will even refer you to another store if what they have doesn't suit your needs.

I've seen many religious bookstores with "church supplies" such as PA systems and Microphones, speakers, and other equipment. The religious bookstores in my neighborhood even sell tickets to local dances and concerts put on by the many local churches. They often have ties in the community and with all the churches of their faith for both business reasons and to tie together the community to synergize the faith's outreach ability. It really is an interesting place to visit (the local religious bookstores), where you will be presented with friendly staff who really makes you feel at home.

I've always felt a sense of serenity and peace when I walk into one of these great places. Music is often playing that feels good and brings you to a good place inside. One thing I love about church is that it is a community of positive people and these bookstores carry the same vibe and feeling as the church session just before the sermon.

Why Are Textbooks So Expensive? Part 1

By Jeff Cohen

Many sites are here to save you money on textbooks but what is the real reasons why textbooks cost so much? We will look at this issue from three different points of view: a college professor and textbook author, the textbook publishers and the college bookstores. We hope this information will help you understand the reasons textbooks are so expensive.

From an Author’s Standpoint

Henry L. Roediger III, a professor of psychology at Washington University in St. Louis and a textbook author, wrote an article on high textbook prices for the Academic Observer. According to Roediger, textbooks are more expensive because of the recent popularity of the used textbook market. He cited the used textbook market as a problem not due to students selling to each other, but to the massive buying of textbooks by used book wholesalers who then ship the book to another campus where it will be used next year. The textbook wholesalers, some of which own the bookstore, buy textbooks from students at a small fraction of the price that the students pay and then sell the books back to the next batch of students at an inflated “used book” price. This cycle results in publishers and authors not getting fair payments for their work in producing the textbooks. Roediger compared the practice to vendors who sell pirated music and do not pay royalties to record labels or artists. The only difference, he pointed out, is that the used textbook industry is legal and music pirating is not.

Here is a concrete example that he provided:

His book, Experimental Psychology: Understanding Psychological Research, was published by Wadsworth Publishing Company. The bookstore pays the company $73.50 for the new book. The authors receive 15 percent royalties on the book, so the three authors split the $11 royalty, and the publisher gets the rest. However, at the Washington University bookstore, the list price of the book is $99.75, a markup of $26.25 (or 35.7 percent). The authors get $11.02 for their work whereas the bookstore makes $26.25 gross profit per book.

When a student sells his or her textbook at buyback, the bookstore buys it back at a greatly marked down price, somewhere between 25 and 50 percent. Let’s assume that Experimental Psychology is bought back for 40 percent of the new book price (which is a generous assumption). That buyback price would be $39.90. After buying it, the bookstore will mark it up dramatically and resell the book. Suppose the used book is sold by the store for $75, which sounds like a bargain relative to the new book price of $99.75. The profit markup for the bookstore on this used book would be $35.10, which is even higher than the (still very large) profit made on the new book ($26.25). So on the second (and third and fourth, etc.) sales of the same book, the bookstore and used book company make large cumulative profits while the publishers and authors get no additional revenue.

According to Roediger, textbook publishers have little options when dealing with the loss in profits. They are forced to raise the prices of textbooks in an attempt to recuperate their initial investment. Publishers revise books often because they want to make sure book profits will accrue to the publisher and author, not the bookstores.

CampusBooks.com is a price comparison website that provides students with prices from dozens of bookstores saving them an average of 58% on textbook purchases.

Looking For An Online Autism Bookstore?

By Rachel Evans Platinum Quality Author

When faced with autism, many families are overwhelmed, and perhaps even stunned. Once the shock of this diagnosis wears off, there is usually an instant need to find out all there is to know about the condition, and what can be done to help the child in question. This is when parents and teachers need to find a good autism bookstore online. Here are five great places to look for books on many angles of autism, and well as other tools that many find to be helpful.

Perhaps one of the biggest sources for books online is www.amazon.com. Upon entering the site, putting the term ‘autism’ in the search will bring up some amazing resources. There are books for parents, siblings, teachers, and other caregivers. There are books on specific tasks like how to potty train a child with autism, and books on socialization and play time ideas. They also have DVDs and toys for children with this condition.

Another great source is http://www.specialneeds.com/. This site has information and books available about all types of disabilities. The list of books about autism is very diverse and very large. It would be hard not to find what you need there. They also have DVDs, CDs, and some software. When browsing this site, it is important to remember that some are marked as available and some are not. This might be a little frustrating, but the list of books is very valuable, and if they don’t have it there, you have a title to search somewhere else.

There are many very imaginative products available on the web site http://www.difflearn.com/. There are great tools like flashcards with facial expressions and other games that help with communication, socialization, and other behaviors. They also have a selection of puzzles and computer programs that can be used, as well as a wide assortment of books on autism.

The site http://www.futurehorizons-autism.com/ has another great selection of books from which to choose, covering a wide array of things that parents may have not even considered before they browse the site. There are books about socialization, early intervention, diet, behavior modification, books geared towards the autistic child, and the family and friends as well. They have DVDs and toys too.

One site that should be on anyone’s list is the Autism Asperger’s Publishing Company. They can be found at http://www.asperger.net/. Here you will again find a huge variety of books from which to choose. They also have information about conferences that they hold on the subject matter.

When shopping for books, it is important to remember that there is new information all the time and some of the material might be out-dated. That does not mean it will not be helpful, but it might not be the up to date information that is needed.

Keep reading to find out how you can stay keep up to date on all the latest autism theories and treatment options by signing up for our free autism newsletter below.

Organizing Lessons from a Bookstore

By Barbara Hemphill

The store reminded me of a well-worn slipper – tattered and dusty, but obviously used and loved. I toured the aisles and backrooms with storeowner and publisher Britton Trice. Celebrity book signings and individualized customer service are obviously major factors in the success of the store. File after file with details of book parties past. They mail out about 200 autographed Anne Rice books everyday! Piles of papers, some of them back to 1984, and announcements of summer reading programs and travel opportunities for the summer past told the tale that getting rid of things was obviously not his forte! The front counter and the shelves beneath were covered with bits of paper, containers of various sizes containing a variety of items – most of them identifiable.

In addition to books for sale, there were books to be signed by frequently appearing authors, books to be returned because of damage, books being held for customers, unwanted or old editions of books to be donated to charity, and various other items to be returned to their rightful owners. Walls were lined with posters – signed and unsigned. Tired and unused display cases were scattered throughout – they might be useful someday…

1. Put like items together – e.g., office supplies (organized by type), forms, take-out menus, tourist information, first-aid supplies, party supplies, tools, etc.

2. Find a container or space (shelf, file) that will hold the largest amount of each item to be kept.

3. Choose a container that is easy to use – e.g., no lid, easy to open.

4. Locate the container where people are most likely to use the items.

5. Label the container clearly.

6. If the container becomes too full, clean it out, or get a larger container. A “place for everything” is the key to organization in a busy environment such as this bookstore. Then “everything in its place” can happen from time to time with relative ease.

Identifying routine things easily delegated, such as checking for outdated signs, updating photo albums, and posting cartoons and other items of interest, will simplify the maintenance of the shop.

A card table sitting in front of two bookshelves positioned at right angles created a bottleneck for postponed or ignored decisions. Replacing it with a circular table in the middle of the room could improve flow of traffic, eliminate unnecessary clutter, and perhaps invite customers to browse longer. Six boxes for required tax records will make “one in, one out” a simple transition, and will streamline the beginning of the New Year.

Finally, remember that clutter is postponed decisions – you have only three choices: File, Act, or Toss!

Ponderings at Powell's - Life Lessons In a Bookstore?

By Angel Hale

AA Hussain - Books in Hyderabad

By Pranay Rupani

What you see - Located in the busy and bustling Abids, right next to Santosh/Sapna cinema hall, the shop AA Hussain carries a piece of Hyderabad's history with it. The structure of the hyderabad book store reminds us of the days of yore. After all, it has been around since 1929.

The entrance is cramped with books placed in stacks all around. The presence of the towers of books is a little intimidating but the collection is mind-boggling. The founder, Riazath Hussain, was a philatelist and had started it as children's bookstore. The store is now managed by his family.

Hussain's has seen many expansions since its inception. There is a ground floor extension that has a large collection of greeting cards and a first floor that has a dedicated children's section (this was the only place where you would find Archie comics long before other bookstores came up in Hyderabad). The store is located in between many old schools of Hyderabad and that is where their loyal audience comes from.

What you get - The store looks quite cluttered and does not have much circulation space that could allow you to browse through the titles leisurely. In fact, not more than ten people can stand here at a time.

So you have to request somebody to hand you over the titles that seem interesting to you. The staff is quite efficient and will find the required books quite swiftly. The request can be of any genre and the books will be presented within minutes.

On the other hand, if you have a specific title in mind the sales people are glad to get it out for you. This is actually one of the best places to go to if you have a specific title or genre in mind. Even if it is not available, the store will try and source it for you.

The store keeps large shelves of Indian authors, religious books, self-development books, health and fitness, literature and reference books. Once you get more familiar with the store, you are bound to find some unusual books that are tucked into some remote corner and possibly a decent discount on the titles. The store also has an interesting collection of books and reference material related to films and sport.

The verdict - A A Hussain is the best place to find the books you need. The collection is vast and expansive and covers almost all areas of interest especially fiction. Most of the customers never leave the store disappointed and therefore tend to become repeat buyers. Do ask at the front desk for an informal yet interesting review of the latest books apart from the store's recommendations. There is designated municipal parking space available in plenty on the opposite side of the road.

Advice on How to Get Your Ex Girlfriend Back - Bookstore, Library, E-Book, Or Hire Someone?

By Mike Caputo Platinum Quality Author

If you are like me I needed expert relationship advice but didn't want to get caught in a bookstore or library getting a book to solve my ex girlfriend problem. I also didn't want to let my friends know I was so vulnerable and missing my girl like I was so I couldn't go to them for advice either. And "hire" a relationship expert? Get real. Too expensive. After all I'm not a sissy kind of guy. I can take care of my girlfriend problems. Right? Wrong! My own efforts had me messing up big time. She was moving further away.

So I looked into e-books on "Get Your Ex Girlfriend Back". I figured this was a good way to keep things private and they can be instantly downloaded so I can get working on getting my ex girlfriend back right away. So after reviewing several expert relationship advice e-books I finally decided on one that worked for me. And, the following is what I found out along the way - there are certain things you should want to get out of any relationship eBook.

1) The first thing you should look for is whether or not the author has received any testimonials of successful reunions. After all if you want to get your ex girlfriend back you want to make sure that it is possible and that the e-book has advice and a plan that works! You want to know for sure that other people have used the techniques and have gotten their ex's back.

2) Make sure the e-book offers you a solid plan of action, other than to "stay away from your girl for 30 days." Staying away from my ex girlfriend wasn't the problem, my girl was moving forward with another guy! Heck staying away for 30 days does work but there has to be more that the relationship book offers you so you can start working the right way to get your ex girlfriend back. Like when to call or not call. When to see her. When to make her jealous if you should do that at all. What to do to make her more attracted to you so she begs you to take her back. Stuff like that.

3) Make sure the author will allow you to ask him or her questions before you buy and after you buy. If you are going to shelve out $50 then good customer service is only fair. And it also
assures you that the author is the real deal.

4) Money is tight so make sure the e-book has a good money back guarantee before you buy. You want this system to work for your particular situation and if it doesn't apply to your problem then you want to get your money back and use that cash to buy a relationship advice e-book that really works for you!

In today's economy all of a sudden $50 is a lot of money. On the other hand if the e-book works for you and you get your ex girlfriend back then it was money well spent and cheap payment to get the love of your life back forever.

The one I used to get my ex girlfriend back was Magic of Making Up. It only cost me $37. After I got her back I finally admitted to my friends how much I was missing my girl and that I actually bought an e-book that helped me get my ex girlfriend back. That encouraged my friends, who had all kinds of different relationship problems of their own, to do their own research. A couple of them (guys and girls) found other programs that worked like a charm for them.

Their relationship situations were all so different that we decided to put together our research on all the best relationship e-books and you can find them all in one place at Relationship Advice Researched

The Secrets Hidden in a Christian Bookstore

By Wendy Pan Platinum Quality Author

If you have never been in a Christian bookstore, you are missing out! Browzing in one of the stores, I feel as if I have stepped back in time. Remember walking around the ole' five and ten stores, from way back when? There was a little bit of everything for everyone. Most Christian bookstores offer a wide variety of merchandise. An offering from books for children to Christian spiritual gifts, with a wide range in between. I have found most of the bookstores still offer great customer service and good quality items.

Now, does anyone remember identification bracelets? Our granddaughter wanted one for Christmas one year. I could not find a nice one anywhere. At least, not until I visiited the local Christian bookstore. While I was there I just thought I would check out the jewelry. Not only were there ID bracelets, there were beautiful gold and silver crosses and watches. If you were wanted something more spiritual, there were also audio recordings of the Bible.

A great idea for a more spiritual Christian gift, try a board game based on Bible verses and knowledge. All kids love games and everyone can join in to learn something. It is a wonderful way to learn Bible verses without forcing the children to sit down and memorize. Nowadays, a lot of materials are also available in the form of video game. Nothing escapes the computer!

Of course, don't forget that most Grandmother's love all the plaques telling us what great Grandmother's we are.

Around a corner you can find beautiful spiritual calendars with fascinating photos. Down the aisle, there will be a wide range of music. On the walls, you'll find lots of Christian posters. Our grown son still asks for one of their T-shirts each year, for Christmas.

We cannot forget how many different Bibles are available. Do you want a study Bible that gives you the history of the Bible ? Do you want the original King James version or the NIV? How about a hardback versus the traditional leather ? You can pretty much pick the font, the color and size of the Bible you desire. It took me nearly an hour to choose the first Bible for one of our granddaughters. You see, she wanted an NIV with a purple cover.

I hope that you will be tempted to go and wander around one of the local Christian bookstores to take a step back in time. Check out the games that we all use to play and can still only be found in a few places. Personally, I like to purchase books that I can share with the grandchildren, to read to them over the phone. I buy them a copy of the book and I get a copy. That way, we can both see the pictures. Happy Shopping!

A Bookstore Can Be Your Best Home Business Resource

By Dustin Cannon Platinum Quality Author

You've had this idea bouncing around your brain for a while but the thought of starting your own business can be daunting. If you're like most people, you turn to the Web to find out what you can. What you find instead, is people trying to get you to spend your money to obtain information about home business resources that you can find on your own.

Instead of going online, go to your bookstore. In this age of electronic communication, it's easy to forget that sometimes information is best found the old-fashioned way: in a book.

For someone who already has a home business and has questions about paying taxes there's "Home Business Tax Deductions: Keep What You Earn" by Stephen Fishman. "Accounting Today" said the book is "Full of exactly the sort of tips that business owners usually turn to their accountants for..."

Another good book to check out is, "Ultimate Homebased Business Handbook: How to Start, Run and Grow Your Own Profitable Business" by James Stephenson. This book is from the publishers of Entrepreneur Magazine and says it, contains "Everything you need to know to start, run and grow your own profitable business right from home."

In addition to general books, you can find books on specific topics, such as starting your own catering business, building a successful home staging business, baking, writing, interior design. Globe Pequot publishers has a series of How to Start books, including How to Start a Home-based Landscaping Business, How to Start a Home-based Pet Care Business, among others. Chances are, if you want to find it, there will be an entire book out their dedicated to that topic. Amazon.com has nearly 50 general books geared to the home-based business market with others available for specific areas of interest, such as handling small business taxes.

Books to avoid are the ones that promise to give you a comprehensive list of home-based business ideas. This is the kind of information you can reliably find on-line without spending the money.

You still have to do your homework. Just because someone has decided to publish a book doesn't mean it's well-written or relevant to what you want.

While the information in a book may not be completely up-to-date, books give a good grounding on any topic. If you need specific information about a particular topic, then go online, but try to avoid the sites that are trying to sell you something. The motivation behind the "information" may be more about their bottom line than yours.

How To Create A Used Bookstore Online

By Victor Epand Platinum Quality Author

Ever wondered what happens to all the new books after people buy them and have finished reading them? Well, they become known as used books, even though most of them still look brand new, and they are normally sold at very low prices compared to their retail price.

You too can start your own online used book sale business. This method of selling books is better than investing in a new bookstore, where your overheads can become very high. In an online used bookstore, all you need is a warehouse to store your used book inventory. There is no need for any storefront or sales staff.

You can make an attractive Internet site for your used bookstore. You can have your book collection listed on the site with the price printed next to it. This is a big advantage over any traditional bookstore, since the customer can access your entire book collection, while sitting at home. The same customer may not have that much time or energy in searching for books at an actual bookstore.

Do not forget to print the sticker price next to your offer price, so that potential customers can see the difference between both the prices. Before starting to sell, you will first have to build your stock of books. You can advertise on the Internet and also check out various bookstores, which may have overstocked on some titles.

You can check sites such as Amazon or Ebay, and even Half, which is an affiliate of Ebay and is selling used books at a fraction of the sticker price. These sites will give you information not only on which books sell, but also the prices at which they are being sold, old and new. This will give you an indication as to what prices to offer, when you are out to purchase and even sell your used books.

Once you have started listing your books on the Internet and their prices, you will start generating sales orders. You will have to tie up with an efficient courier company or your local post office to dispatch the books to your customers. Since you are dealing in used books, you might not have to offer any guarantee on your books, but you should ensure that your books are not damaged or unreadable. All the pages should also be present in the books.

Books are also located by their ISBN number which is a 10 or 13 digit code normally printed in the cover or the back of any book. This helps in searching books faster and should also be displayed on your website.

So, selling used books online is not very easy, since many individuals and bigger companies are now hopping onto it with very low overhead. With your nose up in the market, you can sniff out good deals and make a neat profit. The titles and the condition of your books is what matters the most.

Locating the Book You Desire at a Used Bookstore

By Victor Epand Platinum Quality Author

Many used bookstores today will keep their inventory of used books on a variety of computer databases, which is helpful for those individuals who do not have the time to spend browsing through the thousands of titles within the bookstore. This will enable the reader to access the books in which they desire much faster and easier, which allows the bookstore to provide a better quality of customer service for the customer.

Employees are able to use different types of search filters, which have been built into the database to search for books in a variety of ways. This also helps customers who may not know the entire name of the author or they may only remember the first couple words of the title. A used bookstore that has their inventory available on a database can assist call-in customers much more quickly as well. Technology is an advancement that all businesses no matter what type need to take advantage of to better serve their customers.

The pricing at used bookstores is usually determined by the condition of the books and the demand of a particular book. For instance, if a book has been considerably defaced then the price will be much lower than a book that still has its original jacket cover with it that has no rips or tears on it. If a book has pages that are yellowed and curved, then the same book will pages in better condition will be priced a bit higher. For the most part, bookstores will price their used books for what they feel they will be able to get out of them theoretically. However, some smaller used bookstores do still haggle with their customers from time to time about the selling prices of some of their used books, so do not be afraid to attempt this method either.

It is an asset to keep as many books as we can in circulation, so if you do not have anyone to give your books to, there are some ways to get rid yourself of them such as have a yard sale, donate them to charity, sell them to booksellers that will purchase used books, or simply donate them to your local used bookstore. You could also do what I do when I get a handful that I am unsure of what to do with and that is go by my local library and drop them down their return chute, because they give these types of books to an organization that is in need of reading material.

The majority of used books purchased actually have a new copy still available on the shelves at other retail stores, of course, for a much higher prices, but it seems as if individuals are becoming tired of paying these costly prices. With the growing demand for used bookstores in your community and via the Internet, consumers have found that paying top dollar for a book that you are going to read once and then give it away is nonsense.

What to Look For When Browsing the Forex Books in Your Bookstore

By Alan Bentler

When it comes to learning about Forex trading, there are numerous resources available to the novice trader. Online courses, workshops, e-books, DVD-courses and even one-on-one streamed video training. However, for some, the best way to learn is the old-fashioned way: by reading a book.

The bookstores abound with Forex books, on any topic - from Technical Analysis to the psychology of trading and many beginner traders find them the most efficient way to learn since it allows them to review passages as many times as necessary to fully understand the topics. Imagine asking the lecturer at a large workshop to repeat himself and you can understand why the book has its advantages!

The question is, which forex book will be most helpful for you? Like any other area, the forex trading realm has its share of hucksters and pretenders. Be wary of any book that makes outrageous claims in its title or on the cover like "Be a forex millionaire in a month!" or for example. If a book promises something that's too good to be true, you will not benefit too much from it. And if the book underestimates or neglects the inevitable risk associated with forex trading, you should definitely put it back on the shelf and walk away from it.

What you shold value in a forex book is calm, reasonable, practical advice. Garish, pretentious language suggests the author is trying to pull a fast one. (And you can't help but wonder: If it were SO EASY to get-rich-quick in forex , why is this person writing a books about it instead?) Professional, logical language, on the other hand suggests the author knows the currency market and is simply transferring to his readers what he's learned over the years.

Finally, when choosing a forex book, it's worth taking a minute to Google the writer's name and see what comes up in the searches. Are there reviews of the book written by readers, not some fake testimonials shown on the author's Web page? Has the writer been mentioned in any offline events, such as offline workshops or seminars? What is his or her background? Does he or she have any real-world trading experience, or do they just write forex books?

Take note also of the book's appearance. Is it an e-book sold by some dude off his Web page? Is it riddled with grammar and spelling errors? Or does it appear to have been written and edited by professionals, and presented in an appealing, straightforward manner? You want a book that fits the latter description. It's more likely to be reliable and up-front about the pros and cons of forex trading.

Want to learn more about Forex trading or buy a real book on Forex, written by a real trader? You may want to consider the books and courses of Jason Alan Jankovsky.

Mr Jankovsky, a long-time member of the Chicago Board of Trade, and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange is an experienced derivatives specialist and forex analyst and trader who has designed several trading systems, trained numerous successful day traders, and authored countless articles on forex trading. He is also a regular contributor to Trader Savvy, TSC Top Ten and FastBreak online newsletters and has been invited to speak at educational workshops and seminars around the country. He is the author of a 2 books published by John Wiley & Sons: "Trading Rules That Work: The 28 Essential Lessons Every Trader Must Master" (2006) and "The Art of the Trade: What I Learned (and Lost) Trading the Chicago Futures Markets" (2008).

Tips For Starting An Online Bookstore

By Kathryn Beach Platinum Quality Author

I've always wanted to have a bookstore/knitting store, and having one online is so much easier than a bricks and mortar store. However, there are pros and cons to each, and I'd like to share them in the hopes that my story can help anyone interested in opening an online bookstore in their own carefully researched niche.

Finding your carefully researched niche is important for several reasons. With the likes of Amazon and Barnes and Noble as competition, you have to carve out a very specific small piece of the online bookstore pie and serve it with whipping cream. By that I mean, you have to create a very focused smaller bookstore that offers something that bigger websites don't have - a very warm, personal touch.

The Pros of Owning an Online Bookstore

I have chosen affiliate programs as the basis of my bookstore because I don't have to deal with receiving payments, accepting credit cards, processing orders, storing inventory, taking back orders, shipping, and so on and on.

Going to work in a bricks and mortar store would mean putting together the whole package - dress, hair, makeup - with my own online store, I can do what I want, when I want, looking like I want. to go to work, my store is open 24/7/365 to customers around the world, I never meet cranky people face to face (just sometimes in emails!) and my store is private and always peaceful (no cranky kids!).

Faced with a decision between two ideas for how to run my store, I chose option #1. I can simply fill my site with quality, relevant content pages and encourage visitors to click through to the merchant's website to purchase, or I can use a data feed to create a carbon copy of the original store on my website. I still have to write original copy, to make it unique and not be penalized as duplicate content, but I can have a huge site instantly, automatically updated. Visitors then don't need to leave my website to make their purchases.

The Cons of Owning an Online Bookstore

Of course there are always arguments against shopping online; the cons are that bookstores provide a wonderful customer experience. Maybe you like getting out to book signings, listening to authors read passages, and sitting down in a comfy chair with a stack of books to decide first-hand what you want to buy. And of course, online sites malfunction more often than stores have to unexpectedly close.

As an affiliate marketer there are some things that can make online shoppers annoyed, reluctant and skeptical that you won't have to deal with personally, but you will have to be convincing enough to overcome their hesitation.

If your customer knows exactly what they want, no problem, but if they want to "window shop" the process can be painfully slow as they move from page to page. If they like to "scan and let something pop out at them", they can become frustrated at only being able to view what fits on one page at a time.

When it's time to pull out the plastic, they may question the security of ordering with their card online, wonder if they want to pay high shipping costs, and what happens if they need to return an order?

How I Made My Decision

Most of the cons can be compensated for or avoided by careful choosing of affiliate programs. Few online book companies simply offer books. They also offer reviews, contests, coupons, and ways to participate in what feels like a community.

Website design with care taken to make navigation clear and simple can make browsing and comparison shopping easier, and of course stores with great track records, testimonials, and security in place make all the difference with consumer confidence.

For me, love of my niche combined with love of books convinced me that I'd made a great choice, and success is almost assured as my next love, writing, makes it easy to write book reviews. If this all makes sense to you, then you must might want to try an online bookstore.

Not everyone has the patience of Job when waiting for affiliate checks. The bookstore called "Amazon with a soul" can make you smile. http://favorite-free-knitting-patterns.com/data/html/resources/36.cgi
